The Women's Land Army had originated in 1917, and was reformed at the start of the Second World War. Although conscription came later, it was originally a volunteer service. Developing from the Women's Forestry Service, the Women's Timber Corps followed in 1942 to conduct forestry work, sourcing and preparing the heavy timber needed in mines and other applications.
