Julian Hunt: Woughton On The Green

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Woughton

It has the biggest village green in the county. It also has perhaps the most surviving ridge and furrow of any Bucks parish, so it is ideal to explain how open-field agriculture worked. It was also unusual in having its Rector as Lord of the Manor for several generations, making the process of enclosure particularly easy. What is more difficult to explain is why a large village with a very wide range of trades and occupations had dwindled to such a small population by the time MiltonKeynes was designated in 1967.
